SIX THINGS I HAVE LEARNED FROM STARTING MY OWN BUSINESS

Most aspiring business owners have great ideas for startups, but ideas are nothing without an execution strategy and hard work. Here are some of the key things to know before starting your own company.

Know your market and be informed

Taking note of my customers’ preferences early on would have ensured my business model satisfies the needs of the market.

It’s not going to be a smooth ride learning about the market and the different changes you have to quickly adjust to. Ups and downs and unpredictable twists are expected.

Success comes from hard work

The more work I put in, the more success that comes out of my efforts. There is no shortcut to success but the desire to achieve and hard work. Taking notes throughout your startup journey is a good way to allow you to recall past events and ways to maximize your strength and work on your weaknesses.

Sales is an important skill to learn

Before starting my business, sales has been one area I have never been interested in. Learning not just to “sell,” but also to communicate with people in a way that makes them interested is a critical skill, not just in business, but also in life.

Continue to explore new ideas

If you don’t keep your mind open to new ideas, your business isn’t going to be able to evolve with the current trends in the market.  Businesses don’t just need to keep up with the market, work must be put in to make it lead the market.

Your business needs to be ahead of the market and to do that, you need to continue to explore new ideas and new ways to do your business.  Copying from competitors won’t get you ahead especially when you realize they are all doing the same thing.  The best it can do is to get you tied to one place and not make you advance.

Consistency and frequency are key

Being consistent and frequent in the activities of your business to achieve your success is key to really accomplishing your business goals. Hard work is essential and being consistent yields results.  If you don’t work to achieve your goals steadily, you aren’t going to achieve many of them.

Doubting oneself at times

Doubting oneself is a normal human feeling, especially if you’ve been working on your startup for a while without seeing much progress. There are times I am up in the morning and there is nothing major to work on and I would wonder where this is going to lead me.

One way to overcome self-doubt is by knowing your strengths and weaknesses and making the best out of them.

We can always be better and do better. Doubting yourself too much will hinder your productivity. Confidence is an essential trait any business owner must possess. Conveying confidence instills confidence in everyone around you, whether it be your customers, your team, or any other stakeholder.

While I’ve learned a lot and continue to learn, I wish I had been told to work on these areas when I first started my business.

This helps you achieve more in your business undertakings.  The most important thing to remember is that no matter your age or status, once there is life, you can achieve your goals once you work towards them.
